WebKitGTK is also written in Java 7++ so we need a Java 7++ compiler and runtime anyway.

I am confused. Are you talking about NetSurf [0] or surf [1]?

I don't see how EFL can be used as or with a website layout engine. Could you
elaborate on that?

The NetSurf I mentioned above actually only has experimental js support.

I don't think a port to Java 7 would work out well. If the code is as bad as you
claim, a clean rewrite should take more time and lead to a better result.
