I've found that xpdf in debian has pull request applied which fixes
this. Without this pull request xpdf 3.01 really exposes odd behavior.

So, it's up to you now to either downgrade xpdf or rebuild xpdf with
this pull request applied (http://packages.debian.org/testing/source/xpdf,
debian/pull requestes/20_resize.dpull request in .diff.gz).
